Greetings Members, Friends, and Associates of the Epiphany Sacred Arts Guild. May the blessings of this joyous season of our Saviour’s birth be with all of you.

The Guild has enjoyed an exciting and informative first half of our 2015-16 season. We kicked of the year when the Guild participated in the Man Alive conference in mid-August where men of the Archdiocese gathered to explore and deepen their faith. As we always do, in September we reviewed our aims. Kathy Sievers, one of the instructors from Mt. Angel Iconographic Arts Institute in Oregon visited Vancouver to offer an excellent presentation on Contemporary Iconography. This was followed up in November by Mary Catherine Breslin’s topic “Canadian Reliquaries – Saints and Blesseds”. Fr. Larry Lynn led our December mini-retreat with his terrific discussion on Sacred Art. This was followed by a pot-luck feast and social.

The new year will kick off with our feast day (Feast of the Epiphany) celebration. Feasting, socializing, sharing our latest work, and an all round fun time will be the theme of the day. Mary Catherine is preparing a “something Lent” for our February meeting and after that Mazoe Kaufmann with present a talk on statue restoration in March. More news will follow on the remainder of the year at a later date.

Various members of the Guild have been working hard at producing new works, either through commissions from the Archdiocese or private patrons or expanding their portfolios with new images.

Here are a few examples of what members have been working on or completed over the past few months. Images follow.

Paul Stilwell was commissioned by the Archbishop to create an image for his 2015 Christmas card entitled “Nativity”. This is a project we have been involved with for several years.

Patricia Ballard is refurbishing the Stations of the Cross for St. Clare’s Parish.

Chris Kielesinski was commissioned by Rosemary Heights Retreat Centre to design and paint a mural for the main dining hall entitled “Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes”.

Ana Maria Pacheco has begun an image of “Our Lady of Aparecida”

Christine Lim-Labossiere a just completed the writing of her first Coptic icon entitled: "The Nativity of Christ”.

Frank Turner is preparing drawings for a new crucifix for Holy Rosary Cathedral.

I have completed two crucifixes, a combination of a modified Byzantine-style cross with a Northern Renaissance corpus, for the newly renovated confessionals at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Vancouver.

That’s all, for now.

Steve Knight,

President, ESAG
